Room to Roam

Our three hen houses are built on wagon frames, and we move them around the farm fields.

The laying hens roam and fertilize our pastures,  scratch up the cow pats and dust bathe in the soil, living the best life a chicken can.  Hens are fed layer pellets and oyster shell for extra calcium.

Safe in the Pasture

The wagons are surrounded by portable electric nets, that help to keep the predators at bay and the chickens from getting too far from the safety of their wagons.

The wagons have slatted floors, and are rolled ahead every couple of days, to help distribute the chicken droppings and limit damage to the grass.  The entire netted hen yard is moved to fresh pasture at least once a week.

Range for the Seasons

When winter arrives, the hens move to the greenhouse, where it is warm and dry.

They continue to roam outside all winter long, only staying inside if it is really, really snowing.  Once the snow melts they range the garden, orchard and eventually, the entire farm.

No kidding. In the spring we have chickens in the hay barn, in the shop, on the porch and crossing the road to see the neighbours.  It’s why we call them “Free-er than Free Range”.
